Taiwan’s exports of wheelchairs and other assistive mobility devices surged 11.2 percent year on year to US$126.83 million in 2022, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said Feb. 6.

The double-digit growth follows the 17.3 percent gain recorded in 2021, making the country the third largest exporter of such goods following China and Germany, the ministry said. During the same period, exports of related components and parts reached a record high value of US$96 million.

According to the MOEA, the U.S. was the top destination for Taiwan’s exports, accounting for 34.9 percent of total outgoing shipments. The U.K. came in second at 21.5 percent, followed by the Netherlands, Australia and Germany.

The MOEA attributed the strong showing to local manufacturers’ constant efforts to improve products to meet the needs of both users and caretakers. Manufacturers’ recent offerings include more safety features and lighter, more easily adjustable products for different body types, as well as internet connectivity for rapid user feedback, the ministry added.

Going forward, the MOEA said the government will continue working with the sector to explore more business opportunities and expand its global presence. (SFC-E)
