The Youth Capacity-Building Training and Model meeting was staged by the Ministry of Education under the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum July 6-7 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to fostering next-generation talent and promoting regional development and prosperity.

The two-day session involved 22 young representatives from Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and the U.S. A total of 40 local college, high school and vocational school students also took part in the event.

During her opening remarks, Lee Yen-yi, director-general of the MOE’s Department of International and Cross-strait Education, said the event aimed to help regional youths better understand the operations of APEC and issues of concern in the Asia-Pacific while enhancing their global vision. She added that she expected the meeting to spotlight Taiwan’s prowess in promoting education and innovation.

According to the MOE, highlights of the first day included an introduction to the APEC Human Resources Development Working Group to bring participants up to speed on the progress of various APEC projects undertaken by Taiwan.

During the Model APEC session on the second day, participants engaged in a simulated international meeting, after which senior APEC representatives from Taiwan provided feedback on their performances, the MOE added.

Since joining APEC in 1991, Taiwan has made substantial contributions to regional development in areas such as disaster prevention, food security, information and communications technology, small and medium enterprise development, and women’s economic empowerment. (SFC-E)
