The 2023 APEC Industry-Academia Collaboration Workshop kicked off Aug. 31 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to digital talent cultivation and sustainable development of artificial intelligence technology, according to the Ministry of Education.

A total of 21 representatives from 11 APEC member economies and 102 experts from domestic tertiary institutions participated in the two-day event, the MOE said.

Speaking on the opening day, MOE Political Deputy Minister Lio Mon-chi said the increased digitalization of people’s lives has led to new challenges, prompting APEC members to leverage new AI technologies to foster competitive talent. To meet this need, the workshop aims to evaluate the demand for digital professionals in the region and beyond while discussing techniques to facilitate inclusive talent cultivation, Lio added.

On the second day of the workshop, a visit to National Taipei University of Technology’s City Science Lab jointly established with Massachusetts Institute of Technology is set to allow visitors to tour its cross-disciplinary R&D laboratory.

According to the MOE, the workshop will enable APEC economies to forge a more tightly knit communication network, allowing government officials, business representatives and academics to hold in-depth dialogues and create opportunities for further cooperation. It is hoped that building a closer regional network will enhance the technical talent pool to meet industry needs and ensure sustainable AI development through further academia-industry collaboration, the MOE added.
