Taiwan is committed to cooperating with all World Trade Organization members to support the international body’s work, Taiwan’s permanent mission in Geneva said at the Global Review of Aid for Trade earlier this month.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the mission detailed during the event that the country provided US$432 million in official development assistance in 2022. Aid work focuses on climate change adaptation, COVID-19 recovery, women’s empowerment, and poverty and inequality alleviation, among others, the mission added.

It also elaborated on the operations of the country’s technical groups and their collaboration with international organizations, adding that Taiwan is dedicated to helping least developed countries and developing economies join the multilateral trading system, while also maintaining focus on achieving United Nations sustainable development goals.

As a responsible member of the WTO and the international community, Taiwan is continuously working to deepen cooperation with allies and like-minded partners based on the principles of pragmatism, mutual assistance and reciprocal benefits, the MOFA said. The government will go on expanding exchanges with other countries and continue to be a solid partner for global sustainable development, the ministry added.

The biennial global review serves as a platform to highlight areas where least developed countries need support to overcome supply-side constraints limiting their engagement in global trade. It galvanizes support for tackling such issues so that these countries can derive the maximum economic benefit from trade. (YCH-E)
