Taiwanese pool veteran Chang Jung-lin (張榮麟) on Saturday defeated James Aranas of the Philippines 9-5 in the final of the 2020 Diamond Las Vegas Open, a 10-ball tournament. Chang, ranked No. 5 in the world by the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), took home the title prize of US$17,000 in the tournament held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Nevada from March 11-14. CORONAVIRUS / ASEAN Basketball League shut down due to coronavirus

The ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) has suspended the rest of its 2019-2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a statement issued Friday by the league. The 2019-2020 season, which began Nov. 16, 2019, has been suspended indefinitely for the safety of the teams and fans, said the ABL, which comprises 10 teams from East Asia and Southeast Asia, including Taiwan's Formosa Dreamers and Taipei Fubon Braves.

National Theater and Concert Hall closes for disinfection

The National Theater and Concert Hall (NTCH) will be temporarily shut down for disinfection, the performing arts center said Friday, after an Australian composer and violist who performed there was diagnosed with the COVID-19 disease a day earlier. All performances at the National Concert Hall were canceled on Friday and will also be canceled over the weekend, while the National Theater Hall will cancel its events on Saturday and Sunday as disinfection takes place, according to the center.

Visitor numbers at National Palace Museum plunge amid virus scare

Visitor numbers to the National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taipei plunged dramatically in February as the global novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak discouraged travel and outings in public venues. Only 62,144 people visited the popular tourist attraction in February, down 85 percent from the 407,593 visitors in February 2019 and down about 70 percent from the previous month, according to figures released Friday by the museum.

Freedom House has ranked Taiwan as Asia’s second-freest place in the 2020 edition of its annual “Freedom in the World” report. Taiwan scored 93 out of a possible 100 points, putting it second only to Japan in the Asian region. China received only ten points. COVID-19 prevention guide for performances, exhibitions in Taiwan

To reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, all affiliated orchestras and troupes of the Ministry of Culture will postpone their upcoming oversea performances. The Ministry is also urging art event organizers that have planned to invite performance groups from high-risk areas to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment to determine whether the proposed events should proceed.
