An international forum examining cutting-edge procedures and technologies in minimally invasive surgery was staged Feb. 5 in Taipei City, showcasing Taiwan’s world-leading expertise in the field.

Rescue operations in eastern Taiwan have shifted into high gear following a magnitude 6 earthquake that struck 11:50 p.m., Feb. 6, in the waters off Hualien County.

Premier Lai Ching-te said today that with some victims of Tuesday’s quake in Hualien County still trapped under collapsed buildings, saving lives is the top priority for rescue workers at present, and instructed responsible units to make the most of this precious time immediately following the disaster to doggedly pursue all possibilities. The premier’s remarks came at today’s meeting of the Cabinet following a report on disaster response by the Ministry of the Interior.

An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred off the coast of Hualien in eastern Taiwan at 11:50 pm on February 6, causing severe damage. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its appreciation to governments and politicians of Belize, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Japan, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Saint Lucia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States for having conveyed concern and condolences as of midday on February 7.

A delegation led by Lord Faulkner, deputy speaker of the U.K. House of Lords, recently wrapped up an eight-day trip to Taiwan aimed at advancing railway and green energy collaboration between the two sides, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Following a presentation by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) on progress and results of the Smart Machinery Development Program, Premier Lai Ching-te instructed the MOEA, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Labor to continue coordinating and guiding the efforts of industry, academia and researchers to produce innovative capabilities.
