Taiwan has opportunity to reshape global supply chains: AIT

Taiwan has a unique opportunity to reshape global supply chains for the betterment of the world, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact global supply chains, American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Brent Christensen said Tuesday. In an address made at an international investment forum, Christensen said the pandemic has exposed the risks of over-reliance on one country for medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, as well as for industries that are of strategic importance.

Export orders in Taiwan continued to grow in July, up 12.4 percent year on year to US$45.57 billion, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs Aug. 20. Among the country’s main export sectors, orders for information and communication technology products exhibited the best performance, soaring 29.9 percent to US$14.44 billion. The MOEA attributed the strong showing to robust demand for telecommunication items like notebooks and tablets during the COVID-19 pandemic.
