The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) summoned the representative of Italy Monday morning following a flight ban imposed by the European country on Taiwan amid fears over the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus, CNA learned that day. The Italian government on Jan. 31 announced a suspension of all flights from China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan from Feb. 2 to April 28 to prevent the further spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December.
The European Union has reiterated its support for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization. That’s as an outbreak of a novel coronavirus centered in China spreads globally. On Friday, Taiwan’s foreign ministry expressed thanks to the EU for its support.
The foreign ministry is calling on the WHO to invite Taiwanese experts to events aimed at preventing epidemics. The WHO has called two meetings to discuss an outbreak of a novel coronavirus centered in China. The outbreak has killed at least 170 and spread to at least 16 other countries, including Taiwan.
The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday corrected its assessment of the coronavirus from “moderate” to “high”. That’s the word from an AFP report on Tuesday. The WHO said on Sunday that the risk was “very high in China, high at the regional level and high at the global level."

Taiwan on Tuesday reported its first confirmed case of a new type of coronavirus, carried by a Taiwanese woman who was recently in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. The woman, who works in Wuhan, reported to quarantine officials at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport that she had a fever on returning Monday, according to an epidemic response command center established Monday to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.
Premier Su Tseng-chang on Tuesday urged the public to remain calm and not panic after Taiwan reported the first confirmed case of a new type of coronavirus earlier in the day, carried by a Taiwanese woman who was recently in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. On his Facebook page, Su said Taiwan has 44 million surgery masks and 1.93 million N95 particulate respirator masks that will be released onto the market if necessary. "Please don't panic," Su said. "Also please don't hoard masks."
A central epidemics command center was set up Jan. 20 by Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare in readiness to manage possible local cases of pneumonia stemming from a new coronavirus.
