“The New Southbound Policy’s aims are simple,” Tsai said. “It is about economics and trade.” According to the president, the initiative does not seek to advance geopolitical considerations, but ensure a proactive role for Taiwan in the regional community by strengthening trade cooperation with neighboring countries in terms of markets, resources and talents.
The New Southbound Policy is not about making a political statement in the region. It is about fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with the international community. It isn't about competing with China, but about emphasizing Taiwan's own advantages and promoting mutually beneficial development as a member of the regional community.
Premier Lin Chuan today re-emphasized the importance of the New Southbound Policy, calling on all government agencies involved to take a pragmatic approach, and move forward by enhancing economic and trade relations, personnel exchanges, and regional cooperation with the policy’s target countries.
Since the inaugurat ion of President Tsai Ing-wen, the government has been working very hard to implement several new initiatives in order to revitalize Taiwan’s economy and enhance relations with its neighboring countries. One of these initiatives is the New Southbound Policy (NSP), targeting Southeast and South Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand as potential strategic partners for regional social and economic cooperation.
The Executive Yuan approved the New Southbound Policy work plan, which will realign Taiwan’s role in Asian development, seek new directions and momentum for the country’s new stage of economic development, and create future value.
