At the Cabinet’s weekly meeting Thursday, Premier Chen Chien-jen received a Ministry of Agriculture briefing on measures to guard against African swine fever (ASF) and protect Taiwan's pig population. The premier said preparations must be made to combat ASF during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday period when large crowds of inbound travelers may bring animal products into the country.
After receiving a briefing from the Council of Agriculture on Thursday, Premier Chen Chien-jen announced the end of nationwide classical swine fever vaccinations for Taiwan’s hog population, effective July 1, 2023. This milestone builds upon the nation’s previous successful eradication of foot-and-mouth disease.
Taiwanese snack foods are famous worldwide, and the critical ingredient in dishes like braised pork over rice and xiaolongbao is none other than pork. In recent years Taiwan has progressively eliminated foot and mouth disease and successfully blocked African swine fever from entering the country, and this year will halt vaccinations for classical swine fever. If no cases emerge in the following year, Taiwan hopes to be the first country in Asia to eradicate these three major pig diseases.
