Taiwan’s bid for meaningful participation in the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change is receiving strong support from the country’s allies at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC taking place Nov. 6-18 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
During the annual event, Palau President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. said global efforts to address climate change must include Taiwan’s 23 million people, who have been excluded from participating in the UNFCCC for years.
Taiwan is as committed to being part of the solution as every member of the convention and actively supports other countries’ climate aspirations while moving toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, he added.
According to Tuvalu Prime Minister Kausea Natano, Taiwan should be applauded for its bid to participate in U.N. specialized agencies including the World Health Organization, International Civil Aviation Organization and UNFCCC, as well as its efforts to combat climate change.
Eswatini PM Cleopas Dlamini said no country should be left behind if the net-zero emissions goal is to be achieved. It is time to afford Taiwan an opportunity to contribute to this vision and do its part in the global fight against climate change, he said. The Kingdom of Eswatini calls for the UNFCCC to support Taiwan’s professional, pragmatic and constructive participation in the UNFCCC, he added.
As part of the government’s ongoing campaign to join the UNFCCC, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently released a short musical film “Pathway to Net-Zero” to showcase the country’s achievements in promoting green energy.
The MOFA urged the UNFCCC to value Taiwan’s contributions to global sustainability and called for the country’s inclusion in its activities, mechanisms and meetings. (SFC-E)
