The 2023 Plenaries of the Third Generation Partnership Project’s technical specification groups began June 12 in Taipei City, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The 3GPP is a France-based consortium of mobile communication standards organizations that was established in 1998. During her opening remarks at the event, MOEA Minister Wang Mei-hua welcomed the 3GPP’s decision to hold the landmark 100th session of its plenaries in Taiwan, which is known for its prowess in the semiconductor and information communications technology industries.

As a key partner in the international ICT supply chain, Taiwan has extensive experience partnering with global high-tech heavyweights, Wang said. The country’s well-developed business environment also makes it a top destination for firms seeking to grow their next-generation telecommunications technology presence, she added.

Wang said this event, which gathers international mobile communications experts to discuss developments in new industry protocols, provides an excellent opportunity for local firms to enhance exchanges with their overseas partners and participate in the formulation of new technology standards as they strive to expand their global reach.

According to the MOEA, around 950 technology experts and business representatives are taking part in the five-day event, which features more than 500 presentations from member companies and partners. Attendees will have a chance to enjoy Taiwan’s hospitality at “Formosa Night—100 Touches of Taiwan,” a social function planned for June 14 and co-hosted by the Taipei-based Taiwan Association of Information and Communication Standards and Hsinchu City-headquartered MediaTek Inc.

To bring firms in Taiwan up to speed on related global developments, the ministry is also staging two forums on the sidelines of the 3GPP conference to promote global cooperation in the space industry and next-generation telecommunication technology. (SFC-E)
