The New Southbound Policy has been adopted to identify a new direction and a new driving force for a new stage of Taiwan's economic development. Through economic and talent exchange, the policy hopes to develop a friendly relationship with the Indo-pacific regional.

On March 29, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced one new confirmed imported case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. The new case, Case #1024, is a Taiwanese man in his 30s. The Taiwanese man traveled to the Philippines for work in mid-December 2020, and he returned to Taiwan on March 12, 2021. He didn’t show any symptoms upon arrival.
Taiwan and the U.S. completed a memorandum of understanding to establish a coast guard working group March 25, underscoring the commitment by the two like-minded partners to deepening cooperation across the board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

President Whipps is the first head of state to visit Taiwan since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
